Training for young researchers to come up with more and better research ideas.
Good and creative research ideas are central to the success of every academic. But finding such ideas is a struggle for many researchers, especially for those early in their academic career. Moreover, many stop ideating after their first idea.
Our purpose is to train academics in ideation tools that have proven their value in companies and governments for +20 years, adapted to the specific context of academia.
Isn’t it funny that many academics are not aware or use tools used in practice? In a 4-step-training, we teach our trainees how to use ideation tools in the ‘fuzzy front end’ of their research, which should enable them to come up with more and better ideas to kick-off their research projects.
HOW CAN YOU BENEFIT FROM IDEATION TRAINING?
We know that researchers have different objectives and struggles. Using our ideation tools can give you a head start to reach these objectives and overcome some of the problems. Indeed, great ideas can lead to:
Impactful papers in top journals
Having greater control over ideation
Increased chances on project funding
... and thereby ensuring wellbeing
WHAT IS THE ROLE OF ACADEMIC CREATIVITY LABS IN IDEA GENERATION?
The Academic Creativity Labs team provides you with knowledge on how to ideate with our ideation tools. The tools help you to come up with creative ideas, to have a clear way of presenting them and to consider all angles before you decide on which way to go. During trainings, we will do some exercises, but trainees are free to not disclose their real research ideas in these exercises. You can use the tools at home or at the office, with your trusted advisors and co-workers.
LEARN HOW TO USE OUR IDEATION TOOLS IN 4 STEPS
Introduction and STRETCH framework
We explain the process and discuss your goals for following this training. Next, we introduce you to the STRETCH framework which helps to STRETCH your thinking to discover opportunities (Societal change, Technological breakthrough, Regulatory change, Economics, Trends, Customer insights, Health crisis)
We will teach about the use of How Might We questions and White/Dark horsing, tools that facilitate creative brainstorms. Next, trainees put this into practice. They can invite others to join their ideation brainstorm. After the brainstorm, they will prepare idea napkins for the best ideas.
Feedback and prioritization tools
Collectively, we discuss trainees experiences with idea napkins, give feedback on how they used the tools, and explain some prioritization tools which can be used to select the best ideas. After, trainees can individually discuss and prioritize their ideas in collaboration with an advisor or co-worker. You can use our tools or opt for your own way to select the best ideas.
Research canvas and
hypothesis action cards
In a final step, we explain how you can translate the ideas you selected into a research canvas, and use hypothesis action cards to start verifying the assumptions that you still have about these ideas. These tools will be a starting point to go from creative ideas towards a real research project.
